چکیده

This paper presents the results of studying the correlation between the mapped shoreline-change and shoreline-curvature based on a new concept called shoreline-segment orientation. Shoreline mapping provides a means of monitoring shoreline-change, which is very essential for coastal planning and decision making. When we represent the mapped shorelines in the geographic database, a curved shoreline is represented as a sequence of connected straight line-segments with no real representation of curvature. In this research a new method is developed that determines shoreline-curvature in terms of the angular deviation of each shoreline-segment from its neighbors and also from the whole shoreline introducing two types of orientations, local and global. Shoreline-segment orientation helps determine curvature at any point based on the direction of the incoming waves. In this paper, six representations of the shoreline in a study area in Ohio Lake Erie coast mapped over 28-years have been used to study the relationship between shoreline-change and shoreline-curvature. Average shoreline-changes have shown higher correlation with local shoreline-curvature. The results show that concave shoreline-segments experience more erosion than convex and straight segments.

Extended abstract 1- Introduction  Coastal systems are very dynamic, and their movement is relatively fast due to the collision of onshore and marine environment. The majority of the world's population is concentrated along with the coastal areas. Hormuz Strait coasts are affected by morphological variables due to the hydrodynamics of the sea and the dynamics of coastal and onshore environme...

Modelling of Sediment Transport in Beris Fishery Port

In this paper, the large amount of sedimentation and the resultant shoreline advancements at the breakwaters of Beris Fishery Port are studied. A series of numerical modeling of waves, sediment transport, and shoreline changes were conducted to predict the complicated equilibrium shoreline. The outputs show that the nearshore directions of wave components are not perpendicular to the coast whic...

Assessing Embayed Equilibrium State, Beach Rotation and Environmental Forcing Influences; Tenby Southwest Wales, UK

The morphological change of a headland bay beach—Tenby, West Wales, UK—was analysed over a 73-year period (1941–2014). Geo-referenced aerial photographs were used to extract shoreline positions which were subsequently compared with wave models based on storm event data. From the 1941 baseline, results showed shoreline change rates reduced over time with regression models enabling a prediction o...

Shoreline Change along Sheltered Coastlines: Insights from the Neuse River Estuary, NC, USA

Coastlines are constantly changing due to both natural and anthropogenic forces, and climate change and associated sea level rise will continue to reshape coasts in the future. Erosion is not only apparent along oceanfront areas; shoreline dynamics in sheltered water bodies have also gained greater attention. Additional estuarine shoreline studies are needed to better understand and protect coa...
